LANXESS Presenting Several Eco-Friendly Rubber Curatives at 2019 International Elastomer Conference

  • Innovations to help the rubber industry meet increasing health and safety demands
  • Also showcasing full range of additives for rubber processing during the expo in booth #1203

Pittsburgh, Pa., October 2, 2019– Specialty chemicals company LANXESS will present several eco-friendly curatives for rubber compounding during the 2019 International Elastomer Conference taking place October 8 – 10, in Cleveland, Ohio. Joel Neilsen, technical applications specialist for LANXESS Corporation’s Rhein Chemie business unit, will present a paper titled, “Eco-Friendly Curatives: A Tool to Assist in Developing Rubber Compounds that are Safer for the Environment and Better for Biological Health” on Thursday, October 10 at 11:15 a.m. during the Conference. 

 

LANXESS’ Rhein Chemie business unit is committed to supporting the rubber industry in meeting increasing demands for products with improved health and safety profiles.  Neilsen’s paper will expound several of Rhein Chemie’s innovative curative technologies that help to reduce negative impacts on health and environmental safety, while continuing to provide the necessary properties for optimal product performance.

 

Alternatives to nitrosamine-generating ultra accelerators

 

LANXESS’ Rhenogran® Zeolite-70 provides one option to help reduce or eliminate carcinogenic nitrosamine-generating curatives. When combined with resol resins, the unique Rhenogran Zeolite-70 product – which acts as an activator for resin curing – can develop fast and heat-stable vulcanizates in elastomers with low unsaturation.  

 

Alternatives to DPG

 

LANXESS’ Vulcuren® anti-reversion agent and Rhenocure® DR accelerator deliver two products that can be effective, safer alternatives to 1,3-diphenyl guanidine (DPG), which generates volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during decomposition.  Vulcuren (1,6-bis(N,N-dibenzylthiocarbamoyldithio)-hexane) has similar scorch properties to DPG and comparable performance overall, while for carbon black-filled compounds, Rhenocure DR can effectively replace DPG without the formation of aniline during its decomposition in the vulcanization process.

 

Alternatives to ETU

 

LANXESS’ Rhenogran HPCA-50 and Rhenogran MTT-80 provide an alternative to ethylene thiourea (ETU), an ultra-accelerator frequently used to cure polychloroprene (CR) and other diene rubbers.  Due to the high toxicity of ETU, extensive efforts have been made to replace ETU in rubber compounds.  With the combination of Rhenogran HPCA-50 (a combination of aminic co-activator and antioxidant) and Rhenogran MTT-80 (3-methyl-thiazolidine-thione-2), LANXESS has developed an effective replacement for ETU that can provide similar cure properties and final physical properties.
