Be Safe When Getting Outside These Days: Repel Ticks & Mosquitos With Saltidin® from LANXESS

  • Insect repellents with the active ingredient Saltidin® (Picaridin/ Icaridin) provide effective protection for the whole family
  • EPA registered and World Health Organization recommended

Pittsburgh, PA – April 8, 2020–With theaters, sporting events and other group gathering spots closed due to COVID-19 concerns and with weather warming up throughout the U.S., more people are spending time outdoors lately. Unfortunately, biting insects are there waiting for us, and they know nothing of social distancing guidelines. They’re drawn to people, regardless of other world events, and they’re also quite dangerous, as they can spread diseases like the Zika virus and Lyme disease. Maintain a safe distance from others and keep ticks and mosquitos away, too, with repellents containing Saltidin® (Picaridin/Icaridin), produced by LANXESS.

“Saltidin®, which consumers see listed as Picaridin on insect repellent labels, appeals to those who are concerned about the disadvantages associated with traditional insect repellents,” says Hans Essenbreis, business development manager for Saltidin®. “As an active ingredient, Saltidin® offers formulators the perfect balance of effectiveness, safety and user-friendliness.”

Lyme Disease and Zika Virus

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), “Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States.” And “approximately 300,000 people may get Lyme disease each year in the United States.” Using insect repellents is important for golfers, hikers, backyard gardeners and others to avoid being one of those 300,000 people.

The Zika virus remains a threat, as well. Spread primarily through the bite of an infected mosquito, Zika currently has no specific medical treatment or vaccine, and infection during pregnancy has been linked to serious birth defects and neurological disorders.

Saltidin® (Picaridin/Icaridin) is one of the CDC-recommended, EPA-registered insect repellent active ingredients found effective in providing long-lasting, effective protection from  mosquitoes (including those that carry and transmit Zika virus), as well as ticks that may carry Lyme Disease. Picaridin is also recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for protection against mosquitoes carrying dengue fever and the Zika  virus.

What Makes Saltidin® (Picaridin/Icaridin) So Effective?

Developed in the 1990s and registered with the U.S. EPA since 2001, Saltidin® (Picaridin/Icaridin) interferes with insects’ ability to recognize humans as blood donors. Providing up to 14 hours of protection (depending on formulation), Saltidin® (Picaridin/Icaridin) is safe for the whole family when used as directed.  Currently, there are several major brands of Picaridin-based repellents available in the U.S. and throughout the world, in various concentrations and forms, such as sprays, creams, wipes and sticks.

The highly effective, broad spectrum insect repellent active ingredient, Saltidin® (Picaridin/Icaridin) is known for its skin-friendly properties. It is not oily, greasy or sticky on the skin. Another added benefit is that it does not damage plastics or other synthetic materials.
