Using Saltidin® (Picaridin/Icaridin) to guard against insect-borne diseases

Insect repellents with the active ingredient Saltidin® (Picaridin/Icaridin) from LANXESS provide effective, pleasant protection

Pittsburgh, PA – May 31, 2017– The summer season is around the corner, and with the rise in temperatures normally comes an increase in the presence of biting insects.  With most of the country experiencing a mild winter, the National Pest Management Association predicts increased overall pest populations for the spring and summer seasons, and an extremely heavy tick season.  Mosquitoes, ticks, and other insects are not only a nuisance, they can spread dangerous diseases like the Zika virus and Lyme disease.

In 2010 (the latest data available), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) counted more than 22,000 cases of reported Lyme disease, and according to the CDC, Lyme disease is the most commonly reported vector-borne illness in the U.S.

The Zika virus remains a threat as well.  According to the CDC, as of early May, there have been 5,274 reported cases of Zika virus disease (Zika) infection in the United States since January, 2015.  Spread primarily through the bite of an infected mosquito, Zika currently has no specific medical treatment or vaccine and infection during pregnancy has been linked to serious birth defects and neurological disorders.

The CDC says the best way to prevent Zika is to protect against mosquito bites and recommends using an EPA-registered insect repellent to do so.  Saltidin (Picaridin/Icaridin) produced by LANXESS is one of the CDC recommended EPA-registered insect repellent active ingredients.

A highly effective, broad spectrum insect repellent active ingredient, Saltidin (Picaridin/Icaridin) provides long-lasting, effective protection from mosquitoes, including those that carry and transmit Zika virus, as well as ticks.  Known for its skin-friendly properties, it is not oily, greasy or sticky on the skin.  Another added benefit is that it does not damage plastics or other synthetic materials.

“With the emergence of the Zika virus, protection from mosquitoes has become more important than ever, and Lyme disease seems to be a growing concern as well,” says Hans Essenbreis, business development manager for Saltidin. “Consumers are becoming more conscious of what they put on their skin.  So when they want effective protection without some of the disadvantages associated with traditional insect repellents, they turn to Saltidin (Picaridin/Icaridin)-based repellents.  As an active ingredient, Saltidin offers formulators the perfect balance of effectiveness, safety and user-friendliness.”

Developed by LANXES in the 1990s and first registered with the U.S. EPA in 2000, Saltidin (Picaridin/Icaridin) is one of the newer EPA-registered insect repellent ingredients.  It works by acting on insects’ odor receptors, disabling their ability to recognize humans as blood donors.  Providing up to 14 hours of protection (depending on formulation), Saltidin (Picaridin/Icaridin) is safe for children when used as directed and can be used with confidence on the whole family.  Currently, there are several major brands of Picaridin-based repellents available in the U.S. and throughout the world, in various concentrations and forms, such as sprays, creams, wipes and sticks.  Picaridin is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for protection against mosquitoes carrying malaria, dengue fever and the Zika and chikungunya viruses.
