LANXESS Launches Employee Task Force against Racism, Injustice and Social Exclusion

  • Creating a platform for specific actionable steps to foster change and a more inclusive workplace

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Specialty chemicals company LANXESS has created a new employee task force to advise management on matters of racism and inequality.

The new task force will place urgent attention on specific issues affecting minority employees, such as potential areas of intolerance and inequality, and provide actionable steps to provide equal opportunity among employees in North America.

“By listening and better understanding the different aspects of diversity, we can affect positive change within our organization,” stated Dr. Antonis Papadourakis, LANXESS Corporation’s President and Chief Executive Officer.

Diversity and Inclusion have long been cultural pillars at LANXESS, and in 2011, the company launched an initiative focused on enriching the mix of different nationalities, cultures and life experiences among its employees.

“We have always consciously valued and promoted diversity within our company, but there is always room for improvement,” said Jack VanHoorelbeke, Head of Human Resources for LANXESS in the Americas. “Like many companies, we felt right now is a crucial time to revisit our practices and have this conversation directly with our employees to combat any disparities and injustices.”

The task force, which is comprised of select employee volunteers from varying departments and backgrounds, is supported by a management steering committee that will help implement recommended actions.

“I am excited to be part of this new initiative, and proud to work for a company that is taking action on this critical issue,” stated Sameera Philyaw, Manager of Income Tax and member of the new task force. “We have already identified a short list of immediate areas where we can focus, including employee education, inclusive hiring and recruitment approaches, and even our charitable giving program.”

The group has already begun meeting regularly and is assessing improvement opportunities in company practices, while identifying actionable steps and solutions that can create positive and sustainable change within the organization.

“We are proud to provide a platform to address these important challenges and to prioritize actions that can lead to change,” continued Papadourakis. “We must all do better to combat intolerance of all forms and end the systemic racism at the heart of social injustice and inequality.”
