LANXESS breaks ground for first high-tech plastics plant in the U.S.

  • $15 million investment
  • Up to 55 jobs to be created
  • Plant start-up in 2012
  • Growing demand for lightweight plastics in U.S. auto market

Findlay Township-based LANXESS Corporation today broke ground on its first U.S.-based compounding facility for high-tech plastics in Gastonia, North Carolina.  The company's initial investment of $15 million will bring up to 55 jobs to the Gastonia area.  The facility will produce the high-tech plastics Durethan polyamide and Pocan polybutylene terephthalate, which allow automotive engineers to design lighter-weight plastic parts to replace metal parts in cars, contributing to fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.  Production is scheduled to begin in mid-2012.

"This investment will strengthen our position as a premium supplier of innovative high-tech plastics in the United States, and it is clear that the U.S. has a key role to play in LANXESS' overall growth strategy," said LANXESS Corporation President and CEO Randy Dearth.

The investment in North Carolina is part of a series of investments being made by LANXESS Corporation's parent company, LANXESS AG, to expand its global high-tech plastics network to meet the growing demand for high-tech plastics.  The growing demand is being driven above all by rising car production and the trend towards lighter automobiles. The global demand for high-tech plastics will increase by roughly 7 percent per year through 2020.

"The U.S. is the largest market for high-tech plastics led by the automotive industry," says Andreas Scheurell, head of business unit Semi-Crystalline Products for the Americas region.  "Our new U.S. compounding plant will bring us closer to our North American customers, while enabling us to better serve our global customer base."

The new production facility in Gastonia will be the first compounding facility for the LANXESS high-tech plastics Durethan and Pocan in the United States. Basic polymers, such as polyamide and polybutylene terephthalate, are mixed and refined with additives in the compounding facility to produce Durethan and Pocan as per customer needs.

LANXESS is the global leader in plastic-metal hybrid and composites technologies that enable part designers to drastically reduce part weight in automobiles.  Plastic-metal hybrid front ends can be found today in over 45 car platforms and in millions of vehicles around the world.    Durethan and Pocan compounds are also being used to produce a wide variety of automotive parts such as air intake manifolds, integrated oil filters, front end modules, headlamp bezels, pedal bearing blocks, brake pedals, door handle assemblies, mirror bases and airbag housings.  Durethan plastic can also be found in charger adapters for electrical cars.

LANXESS Corporation, the U.S. subsidiary of LANXESS AG, is headquartered in Pittsburgh, PA, and employs around 800 people in the United States.
