LANXESS Quality Works to Upgrade Beauty

Pittsburgh, PA – May 10, 2018– Specialty chemicals company LANXESS will exhibit at the New York Society of Cosmetic Chemists (NYSCC) Suppliers’ Day 2018 trade show taking place May 15 and 16 in New York City.  The LANXESS group’s sales and marketing channel, LANXESS Distribution, will be showcasing a range of popular high-quality ingredients for personal care products.

Adhering to the “Quality Works” principle and philosophy, and through strict process controls, LANXESS provides customers in the cosmetics industry with high-purity, safe and low-odor ingredients to meet the stringent requirements of mid- and high-end cosmetics ingredients.

High-end ingredients popular with consumers seeking extra quality

“LANXESS supplies the cosmetics industry with high-quality ingredients, characterized by high purity, low irritation, and high safety,” says Tony Mazzarella, NAFTA Business Manager at LANXESS Distribution.  “As consumers’ spending habits continue to escalate, they are gaining a more comprehensive knowledge of cosmetics.  This is where LANXESS’ competitive quality advantages become more prominent.”

According to market estimates, the U.S. beauty market is expected to reach $90 billion in 2018, with increasing trends for anti-aging, men’s grooming products and demand for multi-functional products. LANXESS also sees growing market interest for preservative options.

Another key driver in the cosmetics industry is that product ingredients are being subjected to more and more stringent safety supervision and regulation.  “The regulations on cosmetics in North America are also more strict and specific, which is clearly creating an ideal and favorable market environment for LANXESS, as we are focused on high-quality ingredients,” explains Mazzarella.

For example, LANXESS products from the Purolan and Solbrol ranges are especially suitable for formulations with high safety and sensory requirements of ingredients.  They are widely used in many products of the world’s leading skincare brands.

PUROLAN® isoparaffin series – higher purity, higher safety, better skin feel

LANXESS Distribution’s flagship product line – the Purolan isoparaffin series, including isododecane (IDD) and isohexadecane (IHD), has attracted much attention for its extremely high purity, excellent texture and reliable safety performance.

“The Purolan range of isoparaffins is obtained from isobutene oligomerization and features higher purity compared to isoparaffins obtained from petroleum distillation, with IDD’s purity above 98 percent and IHD’s purity above 99 percent. Also, the isoparaffins in the Purolan range stand out because of their high spreadability and their very low odor. In particular, these products have extremely low (<1%) aromatic impurities," says Mazzarella.

Purolan IHD (isohexadecane) is widely used in skin care products like night creams, eye creams, repair creams, masks and make-up products, such as cleansing oils and sunscreens. "IHD is odorless, colorless, clear, silky and refreshing to the touch. It has recieved very positive feedback from customers," says Mazzarella.

Purolan IDD (isododecane) products are considered as alternatives to volatile siloxanes (D4, D5). Volatile siloxanes are currently among the most commonly used ingredients in the cosmetics industry and are widely used in the fields of skin care, make-up, hair care and the like. However, in many European countries, D4 has been identified as persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic; D5 has been identified as bioaccumulative. Due to their toxicity and their inability to be fully metabolized by the organism, volatile siloxanes are thought to have a lasting impact on the human body and the environment. At present, the EU requires that the content of D4 and D5 in rinse-off products should not exceed 0.1%. The EU has proposed to nominate D4 under the Stockholm Convention of Persistent Organic Pollutants. This could lead to very tight restrictions on the global use of D4.

"Purolan IDD volatilizes quickly, offering potential advantage to formulators. Currently, in the cosmetics market, more and more customers choose to replace volatile siloxanes with our isoparaffins. Purolan IDD has become an industry standard for this reason," explains Mazzarella.

NYSCC Suppliers’ Day is a top trade event designed for manufacturers of cosmetics, personal care and homecare ingredients to join the NAFTA markets to meet the needs of the rapidly evolving industry. As NAFTA stands at the center of the global marketplace, NYSCC also provides a platform for domestic and foreign ingredient suppliers to communicate with manufacturers of cosmetics, personal care, and homecare products.
