LANXESS showcasing full range of plastics industry solutions at NPE 2012, April 2 – 5, booth #49033

  • High-tech materials for Green Mobility
  • Expanded portfolio of phthalate-free plasticizers
  • FDA-compliant colorants
  • Hydrolysis stabilizers for longer service life

Intelligent lightweight automotive solutions for Green Mobility will be one of the main areas of focus of specialty chemicals company LANXESS’ presence at the 2012 National Plastics Expo in Orlando, Florida.  The company will showcase a range of high-tech materials for lightweight automotive design from its Semi-Crystalline Products business unit.  The other areas of focus for LANXESS will be on polymer additives, including colorants and phthalate-free plasticizers from the Functional Chemicals business unit, and hydrolysis stabilizers from its subsidiary Rhein Chemie.

A step further in hybrid technology
LANXESS will display a vehicle front end that utilizes its highly developed plastic/metal composite hybrid technology.  For the first time, this hybrid component uses lightweight nylon composite sheets in addition to aluminum.  The material is used to create a 1.0 millimeter-thin U-shaped section on the lower beam of the hybrid front end. It weighs 20 percent less than its aluminum equivalent.  A customized Durethan® polyamide 6 is used in the nylon composite sheet and the injection molding process.

“The nylon composite sheet technology as an advancement of the plastic/metal hybrid technology is a leap for the development of fuel efficient cars. It enables parts that are lightweight, but still sufficiently strong for critical applications and it has a wide range of application fields, for example in airbag housing, engine supports, door structures, pedals, and front ends,” said Jens-Hendrik Fischer, General Manager Americas for the Semi-Crystalline Products business unit.

Additive Solutions
LANXESS will also showcase a full range of additive solutions for plastics.  Polymer-soluble colored dyes from the Functional Chemicals (FCC) business unit’s Macrolex® range are suitable for use in a wide range of plastics and many are FDA-compliant for indirect food contact.  Applications include automotive taillights and housings for household and electrical appliances to drink bottles and food utensils.  The flagship Mesamoll® brand of plasticizers meet increasing legislative initiatives for phthalate-free consumer products.

LANXESS’ wholly-owned subsidiary Rhein Chemie Corporation will present its leading Stabaxol® line of hydrolysis stabilizers that help increase the lifespan of plastics prone to aging.  The high-performance Stabaxol® anti-hydrolysis agent is effective for extending the service life of a wide range of polymers, including PU, PET, PBT, TPU, TPEE and EVA.

Made in the USA
LANXESS’ portfolio of phthalate-free plasticizers was expanded in October, 2011 with the acquisition of Unitex Chemical Corporation of Greensboro, NC.  In addition to gaining the Uniplex™ product range of plasticizers, the FCC business unit now manufactures in the United States.

LANXESS will also open its first U.S. compounding facility for the high-tech plastics Durethan® and Pocan® in Gastonia, NC in Q3 2012.
