Presenting the development of novel blocked high-performance prepolymers utilizing low monomer technology

  • Achieving unique performance unattainable with conventional blocked prepolymers

Pittsburgh, Pa. – October 4, 2019  At the 2019 Polyurethane Technical Conference (CPI) taking place October 7 – 9 in Orlando, Fla., specialty chemicals company LANXESS will present a paper titled, “Development of novel blocked high performance prepolymers utilizing low monomer technology.”  The  presentation will be given by George Brereton, Sr. Chemist, Global  R&D in LANXESS’ Urethane Systems business unit on Tuesday, October 8 at 9:05 a.m.


LANXESS Urethane Systems has developed unique low free isocyanate, blocked prepolymers with ε-Caprolactam as the blocking agent for the NCO groups in the prepolymer. These ε-Caprolactam blocked prepolymers can be mixed with fast-reacting diamine curatives, creating stable one component (1K) systems that can be stored long-term.  These systems are processed by applying 100oC-180oC heat to the mixture to cure into a solid elastomer. 


These stable 1K systems use low free (LF) isocyanate technology to provide processors with numerous advantages including easy processing and batch-to-batch product consistency.  The use of LF technology also offers superior industrial hygiene and lower hazard classifications versus traditional blocked systems.


The benefits of 1K systems are advantageous in a number of industries including adhesives, coatings, binders and elastomers. Further, the blocked prepolymer can be used in 2K systems by processors, increasing their flexibility to formulate by enabling them to use curatives that would otherwise be too reactive, such as aliphatic diamines.  This creates opportunities to make parts with exceptional properties that can perform at elevated temperatures and under harsh conditions beyond what would otherwise be possible.


The presentation will focus on chemistries with non-traditional raw materials such as para-phenylene diisocyanate (pPDI), more viscous polycarbonate polyols or unique amine types. Such formulations are possible because of low free (LF) monomer technology that enables the use of these significantly more viscous ingredients. These raw materials create elastomers with unique performance and properties unattainable with conventional blocked prepolymers.
