Flame retardant Pocan PBT resin for applications in electric mobility

Materials in automotive applications have to meet demanding requirements in terms of technical properties like mechanical characteristics, hydrolysis resistance and heat stability. With ongoing electrification, additional requirements in electrical performance and in particular flame retardant properties are necessary. LANXESS’s comprehensive product portfolio for electric and electronic applications now offers tailor made solutions specifically for this new property profile.



Pocan BF4232HR, a compound with 30 percent glass fibers, not only complies with the fire safety standard UL94 of the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) with the best classification of V-0 upwards of just 0,4 millimeters thickness of the specimen, but also demonstrates excellent hydrolysis resistance in a scenario according to the long-term SAE/USCAR-2 Rev. 5 test of the American Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) under class 5 conditions.



The Pocan AF product line also offers suitable solutions, currently comprising variants with 20 and 30 percent glass fibers. Their flame-retardant properties, hydrolysis stability and low warpage behavior are ideal for applications requiring extra rigidity and strength. Potential applications include battery cell housings, connectors that are subject to mechanical loads and housings for electronic circuits such as battery management systems.



A further highlight is the Pocan BFN series, so far available with glass fiber contents from 13 to 25 percent. With its innovative halogen-free flame-retardant system, it provides intrinsic advantages in density, color stability under UV-light and long-term heat stability. Very relevant for electric mobility is the high voltage track resistance of the insulating material in contact with electrically conductive contaminants as they may occur in service under the influence of dirt combined with moisture condensed from the atmosphere as described in ASTM D2303. In a related inclined plane tracking test (IPT) according to UL746A of UL, Pocan BFN4231 passed with the outstanding result of more than 60 minutes at 1500 V. Furthermore an extremely low tendency to contact corrosion with metals was confirmed in realistic application testing under warm and humid climate conditions.
