LANXESS and Rhein Chemie at the 2010 International Tire Exhibition and Conference at Cleveland’s I-X Center, September 21 – 23, booth #446

Technical presentations to highlight technologies that help tire manufacturers meet demands for environmentally friendly tires

LANXESS Corporation and its wholly-owned subsidiary Rhein Chemie Corporation will exhibit a full range of products for the tire industry at the 2010 International Tire Exhibition and Conference (ITEC) in Cleveland, Ohio, from September 21 – 23, 2010.

Dr. Judy Douglas, Technical Marketing Manager for LANXESS Corporation’s Performance Butadiene Rubbers business unit, will present a paper entitled “Performance Butadiene Rubber High Cis-1,4 BRS and SBR to Meet Current and Future Tire Demands” on Tuesday, September 21, at 9 a.m. Dr. Douglas’ presentation will examine and highlight the influence that high cis-1,4 polybutadienes (BR) and solution SBRs (S-SBRs) have on the tire tread compound. Specifically, it will focus on novel BRs and S-SBRs aimed at reducing rolling resistance (fuel economy), improving wet traction (safety) and wear (mileage). It will also discuss the successful introduction of environmentally friendly process oils, which meets current regulations of the European Union.

Steven Monthey, Senior Application Specialist, Automotive and Tire Products for Rhein Chemie Corporation, will present a paper entitled “New Process Promoters for Highly Loaded Silica Tread Compounds” on Thursday, September 23, at 10 a.m. Monthey’s presentation will discuss the problems in compound processing created with the advent of extremely high loadings of silica in tire tread compounds to achieve lower rolling resistance (and therefore improved fuel economy). The paper highlights the advantages of Rhein Chemie’s two uniquely formulated process promoters, AFLUX® 37 and AFLUX® GE 1872, which were specifically created to eliminate many of the costly negative aspects of achieving proper silica dispersion in tire tread compounds.

Both LANXESS and Rhein Chemie will showcase their innovative technologies for tire manufacturing in booth 446 of the exhibition.

As one of the world’s major manufacturers of the synthetic rubber polybutadiene (PBR) and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), LANXESS’s Performance Butadiene Rubbers (PBR) business unit will highlight its high-performance PBR, S-SBR and NdBR products that can help manufacturers extend the “Magic Triangle” of tire technology: to combine low rolling resistance with low wet-grip and long service life.

The Butyl Rubber (BTR) business unit of LANXESS will also showcase its high quality BROMOBUTYL and CHLOROBUTYL rubbers that offer outstanding air retention performance for tire safety and durability. Butyl rubber’s high impermeability to gases and liquids make it ideal for use in tire inner liners and curing bladders. LANXESS is investing in additional butyl capacities to meet global market demand. In May, LANXESS broke ground for the construction of its new butyl rubber plant in Singapore, which is scheduled to begin production in 2013. In June, LANXESS announced plans to expand capacity of its existing butyl rubber plant in Zwijndrecht, Belgium, by 10 percent to meet growing global demand for regular butyl and halobutyl synthetic rubber.

LANXESS’s Rubber Chemicals (RUC) business unit will feature its full portfolio of additives for the tire industry, highlighting its VULCUREN® crosslinking agent, which has recently been introduced as an alternative to the secondary accelerator N,N’ diphenylguanidine (DPG) in aniline-free tread compounds. In the production of “green tires,” the hybrid crosslinker VULCUREN® has already earned a good reputation as a very balanced anti-reversion agent and a scorch-proof secondary accelerator. VULCUREN® crosslinker optimizes vulcanization during the tire manufacturing process and also functions as an anti-reversion agent to improve product performance. It generates thermally stable carbasulfane crosslinks in the elastomer matrix that are not subject to the typical rearrangement reactions of vulcanizates that are crosslinked with sulfur.

Finally, LANXESS Corporation’s wholly-owned subsidiary Rhein Chemie Corporation will feature a family of high-performance tire products that are customized to meet the precise needs of each particular application: POLY-DISPERSION® and RHENOGRAN® polymer-bound additives, RHENODIV™ release agents and AKTIPLAST® and AFLUX® process promoters. These products provide a range of performance advantages, including improved product quality and shelf life; smaller environmental footprint; increased productivity and less waste; cost optimization and improved processing.
